AI in Tunnel Design and Construction

Presented by Mike Mooney
$20 Member | $45 Non-member | $5 SME Student Member

The last two decades have brought a tidal wave of real time instrumentation and monitoring to underground construction projects, with thousands of sensors providing data every few seconds. Real-time access to geotechnical/structural monitoring and TBM data, with remote graphical access to data, is now standard practice worldwide. In theory, this provides wonderful medicine for the epidemic of geotechnical risk brought about by massive levels of uncertainty in ground conditions and ground behavior. This presentation addresses ways in which information engineering, including AI machine learning, has been and can be further used to advance tunnel design and construction across numerous projects in the US. The presentation will particularly focus on learning, prediction, forecasting and risk reduction using TBM data. AI-driven advances discussed in the presentation will include characterizing the ground conditions using TBM data, updating the geological model using TBM data, TBM condition monitoring and anomaly detection using pattern recognition techniques, and optimization of TBM operations to reduce cost. Results from implementation of procedures from multiple projects are presented for each aspect. The prospects for TBM automation are also discussed within the context of these advances.

State-of-the-Art Tunnel Condition Assessments Using High-Resolution 3D Data

Presented by Jerome Steinkuehler
$20 Member | $45 Non-member | $5 SME Student Member

Underground structures, like highway, rail and water tunnels are a key component of transportation. Many of these tunnels provide service continuously for over 100 years. This requires the facility to be maintained in service during the repair/restauration work. The latest techniques implement high resolution 3D data to support tunnel inspections. Hybrid 3D models combining true-color photos (with a resolution of 0.039 x 0.039 in) with LiDAR data allow the performance of a virtual inspection in a safe and secure environment at the computer instead of in the field. Fast mobile 3D scanners, like the Dibit ALTIRA, ensure the data capture takes place within a shorter timeframe making sure that maintenance related tunnel shutdowns can be reduced by up to 80 %. Inspections based on 3D models ensure more valuable datasets and superior asset information which minimize risk and operational disruptions tremendously. In addition, the dataset is easy comparable to future inspections as it shows objective information without only relying on the interpretation of the inspector. Future 3D based inspections can therefore increase the credibility of the deficiency mapping by comparing both datasets simultaneously.

Sponsored by Weir
WSP Logo

Price: Free

Weir presents its range of digital solutions which have been expertly designed to meet the needs of customers of varying digital maturity.

The mining industry has always been described as reserved, or slow to adopt innovative technology. However, with recovery, efficiency and sustainability targets mounting a critical challenge to miners’ success, present and future – integrating digital solutions is no longer perceived as a choice, it’s a necessity.

Weir has been operating in the mining industry for over 150 years. It operates in over 80 countries worldwide and has locations less than 200km from every active mine. It’s expert customer knowledge is unmatched. Over the last seven years Weir has been channelling this knowledge into designing digital solutions made for miners. NEXT intelligent solutions, combines condition monitoring with digital twins and artificial intelligence. Unlike other platforms, its focus is not numbers or raw data – it’s providing users with expert recommendations and actionable insights.

In this webinar our team will outline several use cases for digital solutions, ranging from the mature to initial integration. They will outline how NEXT intelligent solutions can improve on site decision making and help miners meet their ever-increasing demands.
